Student Body Fundraisers and Volunteer Work
RefugArt
April 26th saw the exciting occurrence of the annual RefugArt event.
Resident Athenian and RefugArt Executive Elena Martín Ortega shared her excitement about the date, stating, “I’m eager for students to have the chance to hear about the life and experiences of Tateh Lehbib. The event is a great opportunity for students of all ages to learn more about the refugee crisis, specifically this year’s connection to the climate crisis.” Students were able to ask questions to Mr. Lehbib, a Saharan engineer born and raised in an Algerian refugee camp, who created a sustainable insulator. Members of the ASB community were encouraged to participate in the various activities and learn more about connections between the refugee and climate crises through first hand experience.
Botswana
A cohort of 21 ASB students accompanied by staff recently visited Botswana on a learning mission. The volunteers visited the Dukwi Refugee Camp, where they met and talked to residents; the ASB students also enjoyed sightings of elephants and other animals. Read more about their volunteer work and experience in the upcoming article by guest writers Ayaan Taddese and Liyu Workou.
