From February 1st to February 3rd, the ASB community came together to support Spotlight Productions as they put on their first show of the year, “Greased Lightnin’.” The production was a take on the original movie musical Grease, which tells the story of Sandy Olsson and Danny Zuko as they experience the highs and lows of friendship, young love, and growing up. ASB’s tribute to the classic story preserved many of the iconic characters, songs, and plots, with a few additions.
10th grader Sofia Skeen and 11th grader Guillermo Muntadas-Prim Arís are returning Spotlight actors who brought the two leads to life. While the pair will likely participate in next year’s production, Maria Martinez Galindo, a 12th grader who played Rizzo, will be graduating this spring. At the end of Friday’s show, the talented actress gave an emotional speech dedicated to her incredible time in Spotlight.
The performance was a remarkable culmination of months of hard work from the cast, crew, and production team. Since September, students from 6th to 12th grade have been putting in countless hours of work during Lynx classes, after school, and weekends for this show to come together.
Audience members were blown away by the high spirits of the show and copious amounts of talent both on the stage and behind the scenes, with many describing the performance as “absolutely amazing” and “such a fun show.” One spectator even remarked, “I was dancing in my seat the whole time!”
The set design was also a fan favorite; from vintage decor to massive hand painted signs, there was no shortage of eye-catching costumes and props. The star of the set was, of course, the car, a labor of love, wired with real headlights. Crew members from all grades described the process of painting and wiring the car as “exhausting but so worth it,” a perfect description of the entire Spotlight Productions!
With all three shows selling out, this year’s Spotlight Production was without a doubt a smashing success. As ticket sales from this year are one of the determining factors of Spotlight’s budget, along with much of the talented cast returning, we can confidently look forward to next year’s production. Spotlight Productions will also be performing a tribute to “Matilda” with the elementary school this Spring.
