Tourism in the Maldives

Are you going to the Maldives but you don’t know what to do? Don’t worry! There’s a huge variety of things to do, all  possible to do in only 10 days, from getting a massage by the beach, all the way to swimming in the ocean with sharks. There’s so many activities to choose from, for families and individuals to enjoy at their fullest.

For example, the kids club offers a handful of activities for children. There’s cooking classes, games by the pool, the playground, team sports and so much more to distract them while their parents are relaxing on the beach.

Families can also enjoy the many watersport activities accessible to them. The most fun activities are snorkelling, swimming with dolphins and sharks, or hanging on to the banana boat. There are many options to choose from other than those, like jet skiing, parasailing, paddle boarding, or kayaking with a see-through kayak so you can see the fish in the crystal clear waters. All of these activities – except kayaks – have a tour guide or an instructor to make sure you are safe and don’t get lost. After the day, island tours by boat, sunset cruise, or dolphin searching are also available with a reservation in advance and by paying.

Depending on where you are and what resort you are in, they may offer an amazing adventure underwater in a submarine through the corals and marine life in the Indian Ocean. It normally lasts between 45 minutes and an hour. If you’re lucky, you get to see whales and sharks!

Apart from the watersports and kids club there are lots you can enjoy. In every resort you go to, they will give you access to an app that shows you activities and the time they start. Usually these activities repeat every week. For adults there are  cocktail making classes, couples massages, dinner on the beach, swimming with sharks, or a nice helicopter ride around the area. For some activities, you will need to pay, but the majority of them are free with reservation in advance. On Vaadhoo island, once the sun goes down, there’s a spectacular sight of the bioluminescent beaches, also known as the glowing beach.

In the Maldives, there are two underwater restaurants where you can enjoy a drink and a meal. One of them is Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, which is one hour from Malè by plane. It’s 5 feet below the Hilton Resort and offers 270° panoramic views of the coral and schools of fish passing by right in front of you. The next restaurant is called Subsix. It’s 40 minutes away from Malè by speedboat and 15 minutes away from the closest resort, Niyama Resort. Subsix is located 20 feet under the sea and is shaped like a clam. It’s right next to a huge coral reef and you have an extraordinary view of sea turtles, eels and parrot fish swimming right past you.

If none of that catches your attention, every resort will have a spa for you to relax. Usually there will be a few people in the breakfast area that go around convincing you to get a massage, and the app that goes with your resort will send you notifications of treatments they offer along with their price. Spas will give you access to a hair salon, nail salon, sauna or a regular massage. There is also an option for family and kid massages other than individual and couples massage. Resorts also have DJ’s on the weekends in case you want to dance at night next to the beach. They are usually aimed at adults but also put music on for kids until a certain time so that they can enjoy it as well.

Your resorts and hotels give you many opportunities to enjoy an amazing vacation on the island,  but if you’re close to any local islands, you can choose to spend a day touring them. In the Maldives there are about 1,200 islands and 200 of them are inhabited by locals. If you are visiting Malè with a tour guide, they will know where to take you, but if you are wandering the island alone here are a few things you can do. The capital is home to the Grand Friday Mosque, the most significant thing in the country and the biggest mosque in the Maldives. It’s made from stunning white marble with a great golden dome over it. The capital is so populated and offers many inspiring experiences, but why not understand their culture and day to day life by visiting one of the fish markets? In these markets you will see many types of seafood, ranging from yellow tuna all the way to octopuses and so much more, you will also be able to live a day in their culture. Lastly, while you are visiting the city, you cannot forget to visit the tsunami monument. It was built in 2004 to remember the people that lost family members and homes in the tsunami and earthquake in the Indian Ocean. This monument will open your eyes and make you understand what the people experienced that day.

Apart from all of the unique, once-experiences that the Maldives offers, there’s always the option of just staying at the beach or lying by the pool.
