The Met Gala 2024: What We Know So Far

It is no secret that the Met Gala, a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, is one of the biggest fashion nights of the year. For this occasion, celebrities from all over the world gather together on the first Monday of May to showcase extravagant, thematic outfits that will be discussed worldwide over the next few weeks, if not months. Now that the details of this year’s event have been announced, we’ve finally gotten a glimpse of what the 2024 Met Gala is going to look like.

The Met Gala’s theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”, is largely inspired by the new exhibition of the Met Costume Institute, which will display approximately 250 pieces of clothing and accessories that range from Dior to Givenchy, therefore exhibiting more than 400 years of fashion history. Moreover, since some of these items can no longer be physically shown due to their fragile nature, CGI and other effects will be used to display them to the audience.

Although previous years have seen more direct and precise dress codes, with several Galas being entirely dedicated to well-known fashion designers such as Karl Lagerfeld (2022) or Christian Dior (1996), this year’s outfit inspiration consists of a more complex, kaleidoscopic concept announced on February 15th. “The Garden of Time” will challenge designers worldwide to create clothes that serve as representations of a story of the same name written by J.G. Ballard, an English writer, in 1962. The book narrates the tale of Count Axel, a British aristocrat, and his wife, as they find themselves stuck in a castle garden filled with magical “time flowers,” which open and close at specific times during the day. As a result, the audience may witness both metaphorical and literal representations of these flowers and other elements of the narrative in the outfits worn by celebrities at the Met Gala.

As for the co-hosts of this year’s Gala, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Zendaya will continue to work alongside Anna Wintour to lead the Met Gala.

Despite the fact that the Gala is an invite-only event that is not fully broadcasted, viewers from all over the world can tune in to see the event’s red carpet spectacle by watching a free live stream. More details will be provided by Vogue in the next month, so stay tuned for further updates by regularly checking the news and the magazine’s official website.
