Oftentimes regarded as one of the most prestigious nominations in the international film industry, the Golden Globes are annual awards that are given out to actors and directors for outstanding accomplishments in their careers, whether it be for the top drama movie of the year or for a marvelous portrayal of a side character. Best motion picture, best actor, best actress – these are just a few of the types of Golden Globe awards that performers and filmmakers alike compete for in the hopes of receiving one of the 27 gold trophies given for the different categories. 2023 was no exception, as movies like Oppenheimer and Barbie were nominated for the award show.
The tradition of the Golden Globes began 80 years ago on January 20th, 1944, when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association first came up with the idea of hosting an award show to celebrate those involved in the filmmaking process, as well as their achievements. However, it was only a year later that the first gala dinner was held, which consisted of a formal banquet for the lucky nominees and winners of the Golden Globes. But what started out as a minor award show soon grew into a global phenomenon which thousands of people from all over the world strived to be part of, forming the sensation that is still associated with the Golden Globe Awards.
This year’s award show saw a number of highlights, which ranged from historical achievements, such as Lily Gladstone’s Best Actress win as the first Indigenous person to receive this award, to new “Barbenheimer” wins, with Oppenheimer receiving 5 awards and Barbie winning 2, including one for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Although Greta Gerwig’s triumph did receive less prizes than expected, the movie’s song “What was I made for?” by Billie Eilish won the Best Original Song award, marking a milestone for both the creators of the movie and the singer. The actors of Succession, a comedy-drama TV series, also went home with three out of the four acting awards, while the best Animated Feature Film award was given to The Boy and the Heron, the latest Hayao Myazaki movie.
In summary, the Golden Globe Awards of 2024 saw a number of well-deserved wins and losses. The people involved in the creation of some of the biggest movie and TV show sensations from last year walked away with multiple awards, concluding the 2023 movie season and leaving viewers waiting patiently for the forthcoming 82nd Golden Globes in 2025.
