A therian is basically a human who feels a deep inner connection or identification with an animal (like a dog or cat), but only on a psychological, playful, or spiritual level, and not a physical one. They still know they have a human body and live a human life\u2014the \u201canimal\u201d part is about how they feel inside or how they choose to express themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Therians are officially described as people, often teenagers or young adults, who identify with animals like wolves, foxes, cats, or dogs in a way that is mostly about imagination and self-expression. For many of them, it can be as simple as wearing a tail, a mask, animal ears, moving like that animal, or using an animal alias online. It is not about believing they literally are an animal, and nor is it a medical condition. This is a phenomenon that mostly exists on social media and in youth culture, and it doesn\u2019t involve any real physical transformation or demand to be treated legally as an animal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a lot of young people, therian identity is playful. Some teens use it as a way to explore who they are, to feel unique, or to belong to a community they found on TikTok, Instagram, or other social media platforms. It can be a form of role-play, fantasy, or spiritual connection. Adults might see a kid with a fox mask and think it is something extreme or dangerous, but in reality, it\u2019s more similar to dressing up, experimenting with identity, and having fun with friends. The concept of therians has been spreading due to social media. There have been \u201ctherian meetups\u201d in Spain where almost no actual therians show up, but lots of journalists, curious spectators, and extremists do. These meetups consist of plazas full of people filming and laughing, waiting to see \u201cthe weird kids,\u201d and because of this, the tiny therian subculture has started to turn into a large national issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the strongest impacts is how therians have been pulled into a political and moral panic. Far-right commentators use them as an example of \u201cmadness.\u201d These people spread exaggerated stories, like schools supposedly installing litter boxes for students who identify as cats, even when there is no real evidence. This narrative isn\u2019t really about therians\u2014it\u2019s mainly about attacking trans people and LGBTQ+ rights by making everything sound ridiculous. This unfortunate reality was made apparent in a story of a 15-year-old girl who went to a therian meetup wearing a fox mask. She expected to find others like her and instead found herself surrounded by hundreds of strangers filming her, shouting, and treating her like a spectacle. For her, being a therian was a way to express herself and feel connected to others. For the crowd, it was entertainment or a target for mockery. That moment shows how a private, personal way of exploring identity can turn into something painful when it is exposed and ridiculed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All together, therians are normal people who use an animal identity to express feelings, imagination, or spirituality, and are not people who have lost touch with reality and simply want attention. We can also see how quickly a small, mostly harmless youth trend can be turned into a symbol in culture wars. An observable and interesting fact is that the panic around therians says more about the adult\u2019s fears, misinformation, and the way social media works, than it does about the actual teens wearing tails and masks. In a more humanitarian light, therians are just young people trying to figure themselves out in a very public, and very judgmental online world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
