The Met Gala theme of 2026 is Costume Art.

What is The Met Gala?

The Met Gala is a fashion event and fundraiser that collets money for the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The logistics and execution of the event and the theme itself is organized by many people, but the Met is mainly put together by two highly influential individuals: Anna Wintour and Andrew Bolton. Anna Wintour is the editor-in-chief of American Vogue, and Andrew Bolton is the head of the Costume Institute at the Met. The theme and the overseeing of the Costume Institute’s vision is under Andrew Bolton’s control, while the event itself, including aspects like the guest list and the logistics of the event are all managed by Anna Wintour, ensuring that the gala aligns with the exhibition’s artistic goals. Alongside them, a large group of individuals contribute to the creation of the event, such as Rose Carlisle, who plays a crucial role in the planning and execution of many of Vogue’s high-profile events, including the Met Gala.

Each year, the Gala is based around a different theme, which is what makes it so exciting. Guests are either invited directly by Anna Wintour or offered a seat by a brand that has purchased a table. These brands then work with the invited guests to create on-theme, jaw-dropping looks for the red carpet. The designers who purchase tables bring celebrities, or influential individuals, and together they showcase the designer’s creations in front of millions of photographers, all while promoting the brand’s image.

The 2026 Theme: Costume Art

Costume Art focuses on how important clothing is to our bodies. Diving into the strong connection between what we wear and who we are, Andrew Bolton, the curator of the Costume Institute, explained that the exhibition will emphasize fashion as an art form, focusing on the relationship of clothing and the human body. Andre Bolten believes that while fashion’s role as an art form has been recognized, it has often been overlooked because of its connection to the body. Furthermore, emphasizing how art is usually seen as something that doesn’t relate to the body and doesn’t focus on it.

Costume Art will be present in the new Condé Nast Galleries, an expanded space at the Met that will showcase the Costume Institute’s annual spring exhibition. This gallery is named in honor of Condé Nast’s founder and has around 12,000 square feet. It will display both historical and contemporary attire, along with objects from the museum’s grand collection of Western art.

The Met Gala Experience

The Met Gala itself is just as much about the show as it is about the fashion. The gala starts as guests step onto the famous carpet. Photographers line up to capture every second of the carpet. This is one of the most iconic moments of the event, with models to celebrities, to many more important figures out in competition wearing the most imaginative outfits that interpret the theme in many different creative ways. The carpet is the moment for designers to show off their best work, and for the guests to make bold fashion statements, which everyone will be talking about on social media.

The mood shifts after the carpet and all of the interviews. In order to keep the attention on the art, fashion on show, and socialising, the Gala is a very private and exclusive so much so that phones are not allowed. There is first a formal dinner where guests have food, engage in discussion, celebrate the theme, and appreciate fashion and art. The after-party, an outfit change, fashion insiders, celebrities, and artists, is the next event where the evening continues with music, dancing, and good times.

The Costume Art Exhibition

The Costume Art exhibition will open to the public starting May 10, 2026, until January 10, 2027.
