Eyes glued to the window,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A voice inside me whispers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Don\u2019t look at him.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n I hold my bag to my chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He asks me where I\u2019m from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I consider staying silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I consider answering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019m American,\u201d I tell him,<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut I\u2019ve lived here for years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n He tells me he\u2019s from Ecuador,<\/p>\n\n\n\n And in his pa\u00eds<\/em> he has an American school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He says he learned some English there;<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some English words dribble out of his mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou speak very well,\u201d I say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNot as good as your Spanish,\u201d he replies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We speak for a few minutes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n And then it\u2019s my stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNice to meet you,\u201d I say in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cEncantado.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" 10:10 pm on the bus, A black turtleneck and trousers take A seat next to me.
